Just last week, my oldest son casually mentioned that he only has 19 days of school left. Nineteen days! Part of me immediately felt a small jolt of anxiety, realizing that very soon, both of my children will be home full-time for the summer. Entertaining two energetic kids for weeks on end is no small feat, and as any parent knows, summer break requires almost as much planning and coordination as the school year itself. But right alongside that flicker of nervousness was a wave of excitement as I thought about slower mornings without the hustle of school drop-offs, impromptu outings, pool days and all the fun activities we’ve been looking forward to as a family.

To all the parents reading this, I know you understand exactly what I mean. May is a month of preparation, transition and even a little chaos as we juggle end-of-year school events, all while figuring out the jigsaw puzzle that is summer scheduling. Amid all of that busy planning, I want to sincerely thank you for slowing down, if even just for a few moments, to flip through the pages of this month’s Live Local edition of VIP Knoxville, celebrating the heart and soul of our community: our local business owners and entrepreneurs. They create the vibrant city we are all proud to call home.

This summer, as you plan your camps, your trips, and your sunny afternoons, I encourage you to think local whenever you can. Stop by the farmers’ market for fresh produce for your next picnic. Pick up your summer reading from a local bookstore instead of online. Treat your family to a meal at a local restaurant, or visit a small boutique to find that perfect swimsuit or sundress. Every little choice we make builds a stronger community. We’re proud to highlight the stories of those who live, work, and dream here, and we’re grateful to have you along for the journey. Here’s to summer adventures, supporting local dreams and soaking up every sun-drenched moment along the way.
