Story and photography by Marcy Anderson Sanford

The Bijou Theatre’s Bijou Jubilee, the theatre's annual fundraising event, was a one-night-only experience that was as meaningful as it was musical. This year’s celebration featured the iconic Mavis Staples, but the real star was the Bijou Theatre itself. Proceeds from the Jubilee support the nonprofit’s mission to preserve this historic venue and fund year-round arts programming, youth education and opportunities for local artists. Each year, the Jubilee takes on a new theme to delight guests, and 2025 was all about Southern soul. Before Staples took the stage, VIP passholders enjoyed a retro soul party under the stars with music, cocktails and classic Southern fare.
